Given the need to comply with the regulations related to the permissible limit of mercury species in waters, it is necessary to develop selective adsorbents to the mercury species, with high adsorption capacities and low cost, in this case, the biochar, the which presents various functional groups (oxygenated groups and thiols) on the surface that contribute to selective adsorption. the knowledge of basic science generated in the present research work, will allow to understand the properties of the surface of the adsorbents and to characterize the adsorbent-adsorbate interactions, which will help to choose and / or design the best adsorbent for the different forms of mercury.
